5              COMMENDING MR. SAM ASA SMITH, II FOR HIS DEDICATED
6    SERVICE TO THE ALABAMA SENATE AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON HIS
7    RETIREMENT.
8
9              WHEREAS, after almost 20 years of dedicated service
10   providing security to the Alabama Senate, Sam Asa Smith, II is
11   retiring on June 1, 2021; and
12             WHEREAS, a Hurtsboro native, Mr. Smith graduated
13   from Russell County High School in 1963; most of his early
14   life was spent working with cattle and farming with his
15   family; he performed in a Rockabilly Hall of Fame band
16   throughout high school known as the Rebelaires; while in his
17   teens, he performed on two television shows in Columbus,
18   Georgia, and in Montgomery, Alabama; he was invited to sing at
19   the Grand Ole Opry in his early twenties; he traveled
20   extensively around the country and state, performing country
21   music, acting as emcee, and making introductions at political
22   campaign rallies for Governor George C. Wallace, Governor
23   Lurleen Wallace, and Governor Albert Brewer; he also attended
24   the Nashville School of Broadcasting and served in the Alabama
25   National Guard for six years; and

1              WHEREAS, Mr. Smith worked for the Montgomery Police
2    Department, where he served for over 20 years, rising to the
3    rank of Police Sergeant; for the next 11 years, he worked for
4    the United States Marshals Service while also owning Always
5    Outdoors Marine Repair; he joined the security team for the
6    Alabama Senate in 2001 as a Red Coat and began working full
7    time as a Senate Security Officer in 2002; and
8              WHEREAS, Mr. Smith has been married for 34 years to
9    his loving wife, Karen Summerford Smith; they are blessed with
10   three children, Sam Asa Smith, III, Shannon L. Smith, and
11   William Patrick Smith; and
12             WHEREAS, during his years of service, not only has
13   Mr. Smith worked to protect members and staff and maintain
14   order and decorum in the Senate, he has always served with
15   compassion and kindness to those around him and he will be
16   sorely missed by members and staff; now therefore,
17             BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
18   HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That this body expresses its
19   heartfelt gratitude for Mr. Smith's service in providing
20   security to the Senate while sharing his kindness, decency,
21   and warmth throughout the halls of the Alabama State House,
22   and by copy of this resolution we convey our highest esteem
23   and best wishes for his well-deserved retirement.
