5 RECOGNIZING AUGUST 1, 2021, AS NATIONAL GOLD STAR
6 CHILDREN'S DAY.

8 WHEREAS, the history of Gold Star Families began in
9 the United States shortly after World War I to provide support
10 for mothers who lost sons or daughters in the war; and
11 WHEREAS, the reference to Gold Star comes from the
12 custom of families of servicemen or servicewomen hanging a
13 service flag in the window of their homes displaying a gold
14 star for those who have perished while serving in the line of
15 duty in the Armed Forces; and
16 WHEREAS, the United States began observing Gold Star
17 Mothers Day on the last Sunday in September in 1936; April 5th
18 is recognized as Gold Star Spouses Day; the families of fallen
19 soldiers have made a tremendous sacrifice on behalf of our
20 country and should never be forgotten; and
21 WHEREAS, the military children play an important
22 role throughout the United States Armed Forces Community; no
23 one has given more to this country than the families of the
24 fallen and it is most often their children who carry on the

1 legacy and tell the stories of the ultimate sacrifice their
2 father or mother made for the freedoms of our nation; and
3 WHEREAS, there is no date dedicated to the children
4 of America's fallen soldiers and all members of the Gold Star
5 families deserve to be recognized by our local, state, and
6 national leaders for their sacrifices and for their dedicated
7 and patriotic support of the United States; and
8 WHEREAS, supporting Gold Star families who have lost
9 loved ones to combat demonstrates the commitment of the
10 American people to those families now and in the future; we
11 encourage all Alabamians to perform acts of service and good
12 will in their communities and celebrate families in which
13 their loved ones have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we
14 could continue to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of
15 happiness; now therefore,
16 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
17 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we hereby recognize August 1,
18 2021, as National Gold Star Children's Day, honoring the
19 sacrifices and pain of the children of America's soldiers that
20 have been lost in combat, and pay highest tribute to these
21 American heroes whose dedication and service to the United
22 States promoted and protected the freedoms of our country.
23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That we urge Congress and
24 the President to nationally recognize National Gold Star
25 Children's Day.
