8 CONGRATULATING DR. AND MRS. MARK RAFFERTY ON THEIR
9 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY.

11 WHEREAS, we take great pride and special pleasure in
12 extending commendations and congratulations to Dr. and Mrs.
13 Mark Rafferty on celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary;
14 and
15 WHEREAS, Dr. Mark Rafferty and Mrs. Betsy Rafferty
16 met during her senior year at The Ohio State University; their
17 first date was a blind date on February 24, 1969; they were
18 married on March 28, 1970, at the Crall family's Methodist
19 Church in Tiro, Ohio; and
20 WHEREAS, Dr. Rafferty was born in Barberton, Ohio,
21 the second of five children of a factory worker; he graduated
22 from Archbishop Hoben High School in Akron, Ohio, in 1966; Dr.
23 Rafferty earned his Bachelor's Degree from The Ohio State
24 University in 1970; after graduating from dental school in
25 1974, he received a residency at the Veterans Administration
26 in Leavenworth, Kansas; he finished his residency in June of
27 1979, and began working as a periodontist at the Veterans

1 Administration in Birmingham, Alabama, where they moved in
2 1979; he served the VA for 41 years, where he touched the
3 lives of thousands of dentists as the coordinator of the
4 Veterans Administration's residency program and as a faculty
5 member at The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of
6 Dentistry; he retired in 2015; and
7 WHEREAS, Mrs. Rafferty was born in Tiro, Ohio; she
8 and her twin, Bobby, are the youngest children of a farmer;
9 she graduated from Buckeye Central High School in 1965;
10 following her graduation from The Ohio State University in the
11 spring of 1969, she began working on her Master's Degree in
12 Early Childhood Education; her teaching assignments included
13 elementary school in Reynoldsburg, Ohio; St. Peter's
14 kindergarten from 1980 to 1985; and Our lady of the Valley
15 until her retirement in 2015; she is still known around town
16 as "the one who taught me, my daughter, and my son to read";
17 she has taught thousands of children to read, and still
18 continues to volunteer her time to the task in various
19 classrooms; and
20 WHEREAS, they have been faithful and dedicated
21 members of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Prince of Peace
22 Catholic Church of Hoover, Alabama, for 41 years; and
23 WHEREAS, Dr. and Mrs. Rafferty are the proud parents
24 of Representative Neil Rafferty, Ryan Rafferty, and Sarah
25 Rafferty; and the proud grandparents of Sean, Logan, and
26 Camie; now therefore,

1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF
2 THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That Dr. and Mrs. Mark Rafferty
3 are heartily congratulated on the occasion of celebrating
4 their 50th Wedding Anniversary, and this resolution is offered
5 in highest tribute to them along with best wishes for
6 continued happiness together.
