The bill establishes the Joint Legislative Alaska Native Languages Academic Task Force to enhance the instruction and preservation of Alaska Native languages, which are recognized as endangered. The task force will consist of three members from the House of Representatives and three from the Senate, ensuring minority representation. It is tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of academic activities related to Alaska Native languages within the University of Alaska system, evaluating current programs, staffing, and institutional capacity, as well as assessing risks to the preservation of research. The task force will also recommend statutory updates and strategies to support the growth of Alaska Native language education and research.
The task force is required to convene within 90 days of the bill's enactment and will operate until December 31, 2027. It will prioritize the urgent need to strengthen endangered Alaska Native languages while respecting Indigenous knowledge systems. Additionally, the task force is authorized to accept appropriations and may meet virtually. A final report with findings and recommendations must be submitted to the legislature within one year of the task force's first meeting.
