This bill amends current Alaska law to include a new provision that mandates municipalities to waive certain fees for modifications to the residences of disabled veterans. Specifically, it adds a new section, AS 29.35.128, which requires municipalities to waive building fees, permit fees, plan review fees, plan examination fees, and inspection or reinspection fees when such modifications are necessary to accommodate a disabled veteran's disability. The bill defines a "disabled veteran" as an individual who has served in the armed forces and has a physical or mental impairment that significantly limits major life activities.

Additionally, the bill specifies that the disabled veteran or their caretaker must provide proof of veteran status and attest that the modifications are necessary due to the veteran's disability. The determination of what constitutes adequate proof of veteran status will be made by the municipality. This new provision applies to both home rule and general law municipalities, and the bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
