The bill amends Alaska's education law to establish a head lice policy for public schools. It mandates that school districts provide information on preventing head lice and adopt a policy for handling students found with live head lice. Under this policy, affected students may remain in class until the end of the school day but cannot return until they have been inspected by a certified school nurse or a designated health care provider, confirming the absence of live lice. Additionally, schools are required to inform parents or guardians about treatment options upon discovering head lice.

Furthermore, the bill includes provisions for financial support to school districts. It stipulates that the state will reimburse eligible districts 20% of the costs associated with employing a certified school nurse, provided certain conditions are met, such as the nurse working at a school serving grades K-8 and the district checking at least 95% of students for head lice by October 15 each year. The districts must also submit an annual report detailing their head lice policy, the information provided to parents, and statistics on head lice cases and school absences. If funding is insufficient, reimbursements will be proportionally reduced.
