The bill amends existing regulations regarding the posting of warning signs for alcoholic beverages in licensed establishments in Alaska. It reduces the number of required warning signs from three to two and specifies the content of these signs. The first sign will now read, "WARNING: Alcohol use during pregnancy can cause birth defects. Alcohol use can cause cancer, including breast and colon cancers." The second sign will inform that an unaccompanied person under 21 years of age who enters the premises in violation of the law may be civilly liable for damages of $1,500, and that providing alcoholic beverages to someone under 21 could result in imprisonment for up to five years and fines up to $50,000.
Additionally, the bill clarifies the dimensions and lettering requirements for the signs, ensuring they are at least 11 inches by 14 inches with lettering at least one-half inch high in contrasting colors. The license or permit holder is required to display the first sign in a conspicuous manner for those purchasing or consuming alcoholic beverages, while the second sign must be displayed at each entrance to the licensed premises. This legislative change aims to enhance awareness of the risks associated with alcohol consumption and underage drinking.
