This bill amends existing law to provide disabled veterans with a lifetime permit that allows them to access state park developed campsites, as well as the parking and restrooms of developed facilities, without charge. The new legal language specifies that the permit will be issued free of charge and is valid for the life of the permit holder. Additionally, the bill mandates that the permit will be automatically renewed every five years, contingent upon the department receiving confirmation of the permit holder's mailing address. The bill also requires compliance with all other relevant statutes or regulations while utilizing these facilities.
Furthermore, the bill defines "disabled veteran" as a disabled person whose disability was incurred or aggravated either in the line of duty in the military service of the United States or while serving in the Alaska Territorial Guard. The effective date for this act is set for January 1, 2026. The department is also tasked with preparing an annual report on the number of permits issued to disabled veterans, ensuring transparency and accountability in the implementation of this new benefit.
