This bill amends existing law to provide certain veterans, specifically disabled veterans, with a lifetime permit that allows them to access state park developed campsites, as well as the parking and restrooms of developed facilities, without charge. The amendment specifies that the permit will be issued free of charge and is valid for the life of the permit holder. Additionally, the bill includes provisions for automatic renewal of the permit every five years, contingent upon confirmation of the permit holder's mailing address. It also mandates that the disabled veteran must comply with all relevant statutes and regulations while using these facilities.
Furthermore, the bill defines "disabled veteran" as a person whose disability was incurred or aggravated in the line of duty in the military service of the United States or while serving in the Alaska Territorial Guard. The department is required to prepare an annual report detailing the number of permits issued to disabled veterans, which must be made available to the legislature. The effective date for this act is set for January 1, 2026.
