Analysis
SB 243 increases the number of kilowatt hours (kWh) eligible for reimbursement under the Power Cost Equalization program to each
residential customer and participating community by 250kWh per month. The Power Cost Equalization program equalizes the cost of
power by paying money from the Power Cost Equalization fund to the electric utility companies serving the communities based on
actual consumption. The reimbursement amount is calculated based on the cost for a similar level of service in Anchorage, Fairbanks,
and Juneau. This bill increases the threshold from 500 kWh to 750 kWh a month sold to each residential customer. Cost estimates in
this fiscal note assume that all customers will have 750 kWh of eligible use.
