FISCAL NOTE ANALYSIS
STATE OF ALASKA BILL NO. HB 166
2022 LEGISLATIVE SESSION
Analysis
The bill is relating to the issuance of vehicle license plates. The bill would reduce the number of license plates that the
Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issues to each vehicle from two to one.
On average, DMV spends $664,000 on license plates per year. By reducing the number of plates issued to one, the Divisions
plate inventory costs would be reduced by 50%, or an estimated $332,000 per year.
There would be no operational impact to DMV, and no or little programming changes would be needed to DMV information
systems to implement this change.
