FISCAL NOTE ANALYSIS
STATE OF ALASKA BILL NO. HB135
2022 LEGISLATIVE SESSION
Analysis
This legislation would enhance the state's ability to support exploration for and development of state geothermal
resources by creating a geothermal exploration leasing program that is better aligned with the states existing oil and gas
exploration license program. The Division of Geological & Geophysical Survey's (DGGS) Energy Resources Section would
resume a program to publish new and existing geologic data to advance the understanding of Alaskas geothermal energy
resources.
This fiscal note is to support a Geologist 3 position in the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological &
Geophysical Survey's Energy Resources Section to re-start the division's geothermal program. The position will coordinate
with agencies and industry to publish new geologic data to further the development of Alaskas geothermal energy
resources. To accomplish this, the position will collaborate with other sections in DGGS, other divisions within the
Department of Natural Resources, the University of Alaska, federal agencies, and industry on geothermal resources and
projects in the state.
The Geologist 3 position would be based in Fairbanks and will require funding in the amount of $125.0 in Personal
Services, $10.0 in Travel, $25.0 in Services, and $15.0 in Commodities, for a total unrestricted general fund cost of $165.0
